Common Emergency Plumbing Situations
When most people think of emergency plumbing services, they usually think of frozen pipes and flooded basements. At USA Water & Fire Restoration, we deal with all sorts of emergency plumbing issues that you might not expect. These are some of the most common emergency plumbing situations that we deal with:
Every year, millions of American homeowners deal with leaking pipes. Pipes most often end up leaking after freezing temperatures cause cracks, on older homes where pipes have corroded and become weakened or in situations where home remodeling efforts accidentally lead to damage. Leaking pipes are not always easy to spot, depending on where the leak occurs. However, leaking pipes can cause damage quickly and across a wider area than most other plumbing issues. If you notice walls, ceiling or flooring elements that are damp or bulging, hear a rushing sound, have reduced water pressure or suddenly see a spike in your home water use, these can all be signs of leaking pipes. Get leaking pipes fixed immediately to prevent home mold growth.
Laundry Room Floods
Damaged washer hoses or blocked washer drains can cause flooding in a laundry room that is able to spread to various areas of your home. The most common cause of water damage from washing machines that we see occurs when homeowners have high efficiency washing machines and use the wrong kind of laundry detergent or too much detergent. In both cases, too many soap suds are produced, blocking the washer drain so that the water has no where to go but to overflow, flooding the laundry room in the process. This can be especially costly if the laundry room does not have a floor drain or is not located in the basement near a sump pump.
Mildly clogged drains can be remedied with liquid or gel drain cleaner but more seriously clogged drains need the attention of an emergency plumber to break up and remove the clog. Most often, clogs occur in shower/bathtub drains, kitchen sinks, garbage disposals, dishwasher tubing and bathroom sinks. The most common culprit for a bathroom drain clog is hair and for a kitchen drain clog is food waste. An emergency plumber has special tools to get rid of these types of clogs without damaging the pipes.
A sewer backup can introduce dangerous waste matter into a home. If you have a sewer backup, do not attempt to clean it up on your own! Bring in a professional that can clean it up and install the right mechanisms to ensure that it does not happen again.
Water Heater Leaks
A leaking water heater is dangerous because there is the potential that the hot water can burn someone or that the leak could grow into a full on rupture. Additionally, hot water heaters are often located nearby other costly appliances that may be damaged by a water leak. If your hot water heater is leaking, be sure to turn off the valve to avoid getting burned and then call an emergency plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.
Damaged Sewer Lines
Sewer line damage is a huge problem! If the sewer line to your home is cracked or corroded, it will begin leaking the raw sewage that should be draining from your home. The early signs of a damaged sewer line are uneven water levels in the toilets in your home and multiple drains clogs simultaneously. If your lawn feels spongy, looks wet and/or has a really unpleasing odor, the sewer line to your home may be broken. The most common cause of a broken sewer line is mature tree roots piercing or shifting sewer pipes, an accident such as digging up sewer pipe while installing landscaping features, or simply old age of the underground piping.
